Franziska was seventeen when she entered Marie Antoinette's service. She had arrived from Alsace with a light suitcase and an elegant handwriting, a skill that earned her the task of cataloging the queen's ribbons, gloves, and small personal items. Franziska loved rising before dawn, when the gardens were still shrouded in fog, to stroll along the paths of the Trianon, picking up flowers that had fallen during the night.
