Milk MADE
'Milk MADE' merges elements from famous works by the American artist Andrew Wyeth (an art hero of mine) and the Dutch 17th-century painter Jan Vermeer (a super art hero of mine). In combining these works a completely new narrative became possible. The subject is now about how Vermeer might well have worked with the technology available in his time and how I have worked with the technology available to me centuries later. The story is also about how long we look we might look at a painting and what we see when we look. Vermeer painted the Milkmaid pouring milk from a jug into a dish - perhaps the only 'sound' in the painting. Wyeth painted the interior and view to the cattle... providing the context for telling a new tale. Where to look and what to see... - a red circle has been placed over the line of milk exiting the jug - the same milk laps over the edge f the gently overflowing sink - the milk repeats in a reflection on the pale hanging on the right-hand wall - appearing again in a reflection (repeat of The Milkmaid painting) on top of the water/milk in the sink - and finally, it appears in the projected image from the camera obscura... the like of which Vermeer probably used to closely observe his subject when making a painting. The work is called Milk MADE because it isn't specifically about the Milkmaid.
